Spotify Wrapped Statistics: Users, Shares and Why It Works

Every December, one marketing campaign takes over every feed at once. Spotify Wrapped has grown from a year-end gimmick into the most copied campaign format in marketing. This page collects the key numbers behind the phenomenon: how many people engage, how much gets shared, what it does to downloads, and why personalized recap campaigns keep outperforming almost everything else.

Key takeaways
  • Wrapped grew from about 90 million engaged users in 2020 to more than 300 million in 2025, with over 630 million shares in 56 languages.
  • The 2020 edition alone drove a 21 percent increase in Spotify app downloads in the first week of December.
  • After the 2022 release, roughly 400 million posts about Wrapped appeared on X within three days.
  • The engine behind it is personalization: 71 percent of consumers expect it and companies see 10 to 15 percent revenue lift from it.
  • The format is now everywhere: Duolingo, Monzo, Strava, Reddit and hundreds of smaller brands run their own wrapped campaigns.

How many people engage with Wrapped

From year-end feature to 300 million users

Spotify launched the format in 2015 as "Year in Music" and rebranded it to Wrapped in 2016. A decade later it is the company's single most important marketing moment, celebrated by Spotify itself as its "best and boldest" campaign each year.1

120 million engaged users in 2021

In Q4 2021, 120 million monthly active users engaged with Wrapped content, up 29 percent year over year. That implies roughly 90 million engaged users in 2020, at a time when Spotify had about 400 million MAUs overall.2

156 million in 2022, 227 million in 2023

Growth did not slow down: 156 million users engaged with Wrapped in 2022, and the 2023 edition reached a record 227 million monthly active users. Wrapped grows faster than Spotify's own user base.3

More than 300 million in 2025

The 2025 campaign crossed the next threshold: over 300 million engaged users and more than 630 million shares, localized into 56 languages. Roughly two in five Spotify users now actively open their personal recap.4

What Wrapped does for the business

A 21 percent download spike

Wrapped is not just retention theater. In the first week of December 2020, Spotify saw a 21 percent increase in mobile app downloads after Wrapped went live. People who see friends share their stats want their own.5

60 million shared stories

Sharing is the core mechanic. Already in 2021, users shared nearly 60 million Wrapped stories and cards across social platforms. Every one of them is an ad for Spotify that Spotify did not pay for.2

400 million posts in three days

After the 2022 release, Sprout Social counted about 400 million posts about Wrapped on X within three days, up 15 percent from the year before. For comparison: most Super Bowl ads generate a fraction of that conversation.6

The December takeover

Twitter data from earlier campaigns shows the same pattern: at least 1.2 million posts mentioning the campaign in a single December, with analyses counting 13.6 million global mentions within a month and single-day peaks of 2.7 million.7

Why the format works

71 percent of consumers expect personalization

McKinsey's personalization research is unambiguous: 71 percent of consumers expect companies to deliver personalized interactions, and 76 percent get frustrated when they do not. A wrapped campaign is personalization in its purest form: content about you, from your own data.8

Personalization drives 10 to 15 percent more revenue

The same research puts numbers on the payoff: personalization most often drives a 10 to 15 percent revenue lift, and faster-growing companies earn 40 percent more of their revenue from personalization than slower-growing peers.8

80 percent buy more when it is personal

Epsilon found that 80 percent of consumers are more likely to make a purchase when brands offer personalized experiences. A year-in-review campaign is the one moment a year where a brand can be personal at full scale without feeling invasive.9

Identity, not information

Wrapped works because people do not share data, they share identity. A top-artists list is a personality test result. That is why users post it voluntarily: the brand hands them material for their own self-presentation, and gets massive organic reach in return.

Everyone copies it now

Duolingo, Monzo, Strava, Reddit

The format has escaped music streaming. Duolingo's Year in Review recaps XP, minutes and streaks and pays users a small in-app reward for sharing. Monzo shows customers a "Year in Monzo" of their spending. Strava's Year in Sport and Reddit's Recap follow the same playbook.10 11

The long tail is open

Big platforms have the data teams to build this in-house. The interesting gap is everyone else: coffee brands, gyms, SaaS tools and shops sit on a year of customer data and rarely use it. That is exactly the gap agencies like ours fill; see our wrapped campaign examples and case studies for what this looks like for normal-sized brands.

The window is November to January

Wrapped campaigns are seasonal by design. Spotify releases in early December, and the copycats cluster around it. For a brand planning its own recap, the practical deadline is having data and design ready by early November. Our guide on how to create a wrapped for your brand walks through the timeline.
