Reddit Recap (2021–2025)

The only wrapped campaign that measures your year in bananas. Reddit Recap turns browsing data, upvotes, comments, and community participation into a gamified year-end story — complete with rarity-tiered persona cards, collectible avatar NFTs, and subreddit-level community recaps. What started in 2021 as Reddit's first personalized user feature has evolved alongside the platform's explosive growth: from 52M DAU to 121M+ DAU, a 2024 IPO at $6B, and $2.2B in revenue by 2025. The Recap is mobile-app-only by design, pushing desktop users to download — and its self-aware humor (including a 'Totally Not Spotify Wrapped' parody) captures Reddit's unique internet culture perfectly.

Campaign Breakdown

Reddit Recap is the most culturally self-aware wrapped campaign on the internet — and the only one that makes users feel both proud and existentially guilty about their year. While Spotify celebrates your music taste and Strava celebrates your fitness, Reddit Recap quantifies how many bananas you scrolled, how many trips to the moon your screen time equals, and which rabbit holes consumed your year. It's Wrapped for the doomscroller — and Reddit leans into that tension with remarkable honesty.

Before Recap existed, Reddit published platform-wide 'Year in Review' blog posts with aggregate stats: 330M MAU in 2018, 430M in 2019, 52M DAU and 2 billion comments in 2020. But these were impersonal data dumps, not shareable moments. The first personalized Reddit Recap launched on December 8, 2021, showing each user their scrolling distance (measured in bananas), most-visited communities, karma earned, and whether they were among the first to engage with trending topics. The r/blog announcement post received 146,000 upvotes in two days — though the 65% upvote ratio revealed that a third of the community was skeptical from day one.

The 2022 edition was the quantum leap. Reddit introduced shareable persona cards with rarity tiers — Rare, Epic, or Legendary based on karma earned — each with distinct visual treatments (Legendary cards featured a multicolor sheen). Eight 'Reddit Special Ability' badges categorized users by engagement style. Collectible Avatar NFTs on the Polygon blockchain tied directly to Recap themes: 'Channel Surfers,' 'Band Kids,' 'Button Mashers.' And Reddit produced two campaign videos: a surreal 'Bananas Universe' short via DEPT agency, and a brilliantly self-deprecating 'Totally Not Spotify Wrapped' parody that directly acknowledged what everyone was thinking. A Times Square billboard rounded out the out-of-home push.

In 2023, Reddit added Community Recaps — giving individual subreddits their own year-end story with top posts, comments, and unique visitor counts. This was a genuinely novel mechanic: no other wrapped campaign wraps both the individual AND the community they belong to. The feature strengthened subreddit identity and gave moderators a moment to celebrate their community's year. r/AmItheAsshole (AITA) claimed the most-viewed community title for the third consecutive year.

The 2024 Recap arrived alongside Reddit's biggest year ever. The company had gone public in March 2024 at $34/share (closing day one at $50.44, up 48%), and Q3 2024 delivered the first profitable quarter in Reddit's history. DAU hit 97.2M, up 47% YoY. The Recap introduced a 44-achievement system with streak badges (up to 500 consecutive days), community rankings (Top 5% commenter, Top 25% poster), and avatar outfit unlocks. The swipeable card format was redesigned in a TikTok-style carousel interface — and remained stubbornly mobile-app-only, forcing desktop users to download the app to see their stats.

Reddit Recap's strategic genius is the mobile-app lock-in. By making Recap exclusively available on iOS and Android — accessed via a pixelated banana icon next to the profile picture — Reddit converts December curiosity into app installs. Combined with the shareable cards that spread across X, Instagram Stories, and group chats, Recap functions as both a retention tool and an acquisition engine. By Q4 2025, Reddit had reached 121.4M DAU, $2.2B in annual revenue (up 69% YoY), and $530M in net income — its first full year of profitability. The platform that once couldn't monetize its massive traffic had turned user data into a Wall Street success story, and Reddit Recap was the annual celebration of that engagement.

146K upvotes on r/blog announcement

First-ever personalized Reddit Recap — previously only platform-wide blog posts existed. Users saw: distance scrolled in bananas, communities joined, page views, most upvoted post, karma earned, subreddits they helped grow, niche topics that resonated, whether they caught trends early. Platform stats: 366M posts (+19% YoY), 2.3B comments (+12%), 46B upvotes. r/wallstreetbets dominated top posts (GameStop). 6.6M cryptocurrency mentions. Video announcement similar to YouTube Rewind style.

The origin — and Reddit's entry into the wrapped-style format, three years before its IPO. The 146,000 upvotes on the announcement showed massive interest, but the 65% upvote ratio (35% downvoted) revealed Reddit's characteristic skepticism toward corporate features. Slate called it 'Spotify Wrapped but way worse' because quantifying scrolling time induces guilt rather than celebration.
